The Boat House Villa, Dubbo

Where luxury accommodation, chic industrial styling and rural riverside serenity meet. Just 10 minutes from Dubbo, on the banks of the Macquarie River, lies the sophisticated and luxurious Boat House Villa, a self-contained converted hayshed nestled amongst the vineyards of the Lazy River Estate winery and function centre. Owners Pamela and Peter Scott converted the hayshed into a residence when they moved onto the beautiful river-flat acreage, and lived in it while their current house was under construction on the same property. Then they added the function centre between the two. Nestled in the vineyards, it’s a popular venue for weddings and corporate events. Although these days the winemaking happens further south, in Mudgee, it’s produced exclusively for the function centre. Pamela’s passion for interior decorating is evident in every corner of the Boat House. Its striking polished concrete floor and soaring ceiling, teamed with industrial styling and recycled furniture, create a decidedly urban warehouse aesthetic in this country idyll. Huge double barn doors came back from a trip to Bali, while a number of jetty pylons were rescued from Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula and are currently enjoying a new life far from the sea, holding up the large north-facing deck overlooking the vines. Relics, including an old petrol bowser and coin-operated scales, contribute to the theme of reuse, while what’s possibly the world’s biggest ceiling fan spins slowly above as though cooling weary factory workers. The look and feel of the Boat House is simultaneously luxurious and gritty, its industrial vibe sure to please the most discerning city dweller. And Peter’s touch is evident too; he handcrafted a number of furniture items such as the striking floor lamp overhanging the plush downstairs daybed where you’ll happily pass an afternoon with a good book and a glass of Lazy River Estate chardonnay. The open-plan downstairs includes a spacious lounge and dining areas, fully equipped modern kitchen, a powder room and a laundry, plus the aforementioned reading nook, nap spot and your favourite place – other than the river – at sunset. The outdoor barbeque area will be a hit in summer, with twin Weber barbeques and ample places to sit and hang out. Upstairs, on a mezzanine level, there are two bedrooms with queen-sized beds wearing quality linen, and a shared bathroom complete with an enormous Balinese stone bathtub that you’ll be lucky to be able to drag yourself away from. Two more guests can be accommodated on single trundle beds for a small nightly charge, and the maximum number of occupants is six. Guests are free to wander the property as they like, and with the river just a stone’s throw across the vineyard, an afternoon walk is highly recommended. The Macquarie babbles along at a reasonable pace here, the peaceful sound offset by the evening cacophony of raucous native Australian birds. Strolling along the river’s edge reveals an interesting collection of old cars, sculptures, swings, picnic tables and even a flying fox, all nestled within the lush long grass beneath the giant and no doubt ancient river red gums. Listen carefully at dawn and dusk and you might just pick up distant sounds of Africa – Taronga Western Plains Zoo is across the river. Offering unique and opulent accommodation within a beautiful riverside setting an easy drive from the centre of Dubbo, the Boat House Villa is a true hidden gem of Central NSW.  The Boat House Villa is located at 29R Old Dubbo Rd, Dubbo, NSW.
