Stay in a lovingly restored historic convent just a stone’s throw from Tamworth.
For charming, truly unique accommodation in the Tamworth region, look no further than Abbey on Rowan. Set in a restored, turn-of-the-century convent within an acre of beautifully landscaped gardens, this is a bed and breakfast full of character and warmth.
Abbey on Rowan is located in the small township of Manilla, just 45km north of Tamworth, and is a great option for those seeking the peace and quiet of a tiny, quaint country town within an easy drive from the attractions and facilities of Tamworth.
The Abbey is run by Larraine and Allen White, Manilla locals who made the move into town from their farm on its outskirts almost 20 years ago. Larraine told Travel In she just loves being in amongst the ‘action’ (although that term is relative – Manilla is wonderfully quiet), and with her warm personality it is clear hospitality is her calling. An avid green thumb, Larraine has the property overflowing in beautiful English gardens, while inside her passion is collecting antiques.
Indeed, each of the three rooms available for rent are beautifully furnished in period items and decorated in keeping with the building’s heritage as a convent. Stemming from a grand central hallway, the Princess Room is the premier suite, decorated in hues of rich burgundy with a private ensuite and French doors opening onto the house’s wrap-around Edwardian veranda. The Bishop’s room is has a double bed and a shared bathroom, while the Chapel Room has beautiful original church windows and two single beds, also with a shared bathroom.
Breakfast is taken in the shared dining room, and there’s a cosy lounge room with an open fire place that remains stoked throughout the winter. And although we visited in early summer, one can’t help but notice what a wonderful winter escape the Abbey would make.
The Abbey on Rowan Bed and Breakfast is located at 43 Rowan St, Manilla, NSW.
