Archers Crossing camping areas (North & South), Qld

Adventures

Archers Crossing (South) camping area is 24km of Chinchilla. It is basic bush camping with grassy sites, barbecues and bins.

Archers Crossing (North) camping area is 11km from Chinchilla. There is bush camping (two days maximum) suitable for caravans, camper trailers and motorhomes, with barbecues, tables and fireplaces.

ARCHERS CROSSING (SOUTH)

To reach Archers Crossing (South) camping area, travel east from Chinchilla along the Warrego Highway for 10km, take the Hopelands-Kogan (Condamine River) turnoff and proceed 9km to Hopelands School.

Turn right here and continue for 2.2km to Archers Crossing Road (first gravel road on the right) then follow this 4km to its terminus at the camping area.

The expansive reserve is a delightful location, with grassy sites among open forest beside the river, suitable for self-sufficient campers in caravans, camper trailers, motorhomes or tents.

A picnic shelter with barbecues and rubbish bins stands on the edge of the clearing above the boat ramp with views overlooking the river.

Beyond the picnic shelter, a track continues into the forest on a scenic drive to points of interest, such as Aboriginal scar trees, and tranquil nooks along the river bank from which to wet a line.

This is free, back-to-nature camping with minimal facilities and, except on long weekends when it is popular with locals, there’s every chance you’ll have this place all to yourself.

A nominal two-day maximum applies to stays here too, but I saw a couple of bivouacs that looked like they had been there much longer, and would remain for a while yet.
