Tucked in a quiet laneway in the center of town, this sophisticated and charming café dishes up delicious, Mediterranean-inspired food.
Out of sight but certainly not out of the minds of Armidale locals, Bistro on Cinders is a cosy café nestled behind the post office on a quiet one-way lane. It’s in the middle of town but blissfully protected from the hustle and bustle.
Located within a charming heritage building whose dark brickwork is offset by large arched windows that flood the homely interior with light, Bistro on Cinders is a delightful place to wile away an hour or two over breakfast or lunch. The interior has an air of French provincial, with fresh flowers adorning the bar over which hang stunning vintage light fixtures casting a warm ambience on the painted exposed brick walls. There’s also a large, sunny courtyard filled with plants for al fresco dining on a warm day.
Bistro on Cinders was created by a young couple who migrated to Armidale in 2008; Marie from Sydney, and Vinko all the way from Greece. The menu changes with the seasons but always offers fresh home-style fare with a distinct Mediterranean influence.
Breakfast aficionados will find something to tickle their fancy, from a devilish stack of pikelets with berries and a dollop of double cream, to a healthy egg-white omelette with mushrooms and roasted tomato. Lunch can be as deliciously light as locally sourced smoked ocean trout on a baby beetroot and pine-nut salad or as hearty as chicken liver pâté with port wine jelly served on Turkish toast. Fancy something sweet? Perhaps a spiced orange and pistachio syrup cake will hit the spot, or maybe cardamom and rosewater brûlée is more to your liking?
If creative home-style cooking served in generous portions by happy and helpful waiting staff is your idea of the perfect breakfast or lunch, you’re going to want to call into Bistro on Cinders.
