A newly restored historic miner’s cottage combines modern comforts with the distinct charm of Broken Hill’s history.
For unique heritage accommodation in Broken Hill, look no further than the Charming Miner’s Cottage.
Broken Hill is famous for its mining history, and the ‘boom and bust’ conditions that have led to its distinct visual style. Grand corner pubs combine with stately government buildings on the town’s main street, while ramshackle miner’s cottages line the town’s residential streets in a hodgepodge of corrugated iron that was never intended to serve beyond the ‘boom’. But serve it did, with a great number of miner’s cottages remaining in the town in various states of disrepair.
The Charming Miner’s Cottage was in rather an advanced state of disrepair when local couple Paula Williams and Susanne Olsen purchased it. The pair lovingly restored the two-bedroom house, introducing modern comforts like air-conditioning, a contemporary bathroom with freestanding tub and a functional kitchen with all the mod cons. They introduced larger windows for greater flow of air and light, sourcing these – like many items in the cottage – from demolition sites around Broken Hill. The result is an aesthetic that is fresh and light, while also filled with charm and character.
Furnished in eclectic vintage pieces found at second hand stores locally and further afield, the cottage boasts the odd touch of luxury, like a fabulously comfortable bed and quality linen. This mix of old and new has resulted in a wonderfully charming self-contained home away from home that sacrifices nothing when it comes to modern comfort.
And while Paula and Susanne could have easily kept the two-bedroom layout they instead decided to make this is a spacious retreat for couples and singles, with one bedroom and multiple living areas. You’ll have as much room to move in here as you do in the wide, open outback that laps at the cottage’s front door.
So for an authentic Broken Hill experience with more soul and character than any motel could muster, book yourself into the heritage award-winning Charming Miner’s Cottage.
