We ‘Take 5’ with the Artistic Director at the Lieder Theatre in Goulburn, Chrisjohn Hancock.
What is the best thing to do in Goulburn?
Go to the Lieder Theatre! I spend almost all of my time here, working on the shows, and we often have premieres of work from local playwrights. Our next big one tells the true story of a local Indigenous man who went off to fight for Australia in World War I, but, more interestingly, he was raised by one of the local white settler families, after their relatives killed all of his in a massacre - this little baby was the only person left alive.
What is your favourite restaurant?
My favourite restaurant in town is the Goulburn Thai Restaurant on Auburn St, because the food is so authentic.
Favourite spot to explore in the great outdoors?
I haven’t done this for years but bushwalking out at Bungonia is great, there are caves, wildlife and the scenery is spectacular.
The Goulburn Regional Art Gallery puts on some really good exhibitions and I like them because they have a great relationship with the Lieder. We performed there at the opening of the Archibald, dressed in the clothes of some of the subjects of the paintings, and acting like them.
Best way to relax?
Go and see a movie at the Lilac City Cinema for $8 and get a large popcorn for only $4. I go to Tuggerah regularly and for a ticket there you’ll pay $18-$25.
