If total seclusion in stylish accommodation on a working farm just a stone’s throw from the Hilltops wine region appeals to you, Colenso is bound to impress.
There’s something exhilarating about finding your accommodation for the weekend by tentatively poking down unsealed roads and over undulating paddocks, a guest in the heart of rich farmland.
At the right time of year, the landscape here is a patchwork of dazzling yellow canola flowers and golden wheat as far as the eye can see. As you slow at every intersection to carefully follow written directions, you know you’re in for an experience as much as you’re in for a comfy bed. Welcome to Colenso.
A sprawling property that has been in owners Stan and Annette Hume’s family for five generations, Colenso is a working commercial farm, producing the complementary crops canola and wheat.
Your home away from home at Colenso is right in the thick of it, with crops growing all the way up to the front and back fences. Your country retreat doesn’t get much more authentic than that.
Comprised of two tastefully restored farmhouses, Colenso offers fully self-contained accommodation suitable for couples to bigger groups.
And self-contained is the key word; you’re a 15-minute drive from the small town of Harden and 35 minutes from Young, so be sure to arrive with plenty of groceries because you’re going to want to cosy up to the fire and settle in. And country hospitality dictates it’ll be roaring on arrival; just one of the many niceties at Colenso.
The larger of the two houses, Colenso Country Retreat, has four bedrooms and two full-size bathrooms, comfortably accommodating eight people. It has a large open-plan kitchen and dining room, with a big rustic wooden table for shared meals.
The centerpiece of the lounge room is the open fireplace, and an eclectic selection of books will keep you in this room for hours during winter. A large deck spills off this room and forms an excellent outdoor living area where you’ll undoubtedly pass most of your time if visiting in summer during the cherry season, but it’s also perfect for soaking in some winter sunshine.
The smaller of the two houses, Walker’s, was completely gutted and turned into a stylish open-plan home with two spacious bedrooms, each with their own ensuite, making it ideal for two couples or smaller families in which the kids are happy to share one of the comfy queen beds.
The rest of the house comprises a large living and dining room with the kitchen at the end, the entire space flanked by two large undercover and fully enclosed decks. These are totally bug-proof in summer and allow you to capitalise on both the morning sunshine and the evening sunset as they are positioned facing east and west respectively.
There is a gas fireplace in Walkers, along with everything you need for comfortable self-contained living – from kitchen appliances to a washing machine.
Pets are welcome at Colenso and are allowed inside, but you’ll need to bring their own bedding and keep them off the furniture. They’ll probably prefer their mat nice and close to the fire, anyway.
The Humes are happy to suggest walking routes around the farm, so if you do bring the pooch he/she may get to live the working-dog life for a short while.
Both houses are stylishly bedecked in a mix of new and antique furniture to achieve a French provincial aesthetic, and as you wander from spotless room to spotless room it’s clear Annette has an eye for interior styling.
Friendly and welcoming, she’ll likely call in to say hello with her Great Dane George ambling along beside her, then leave you blissfully to your own devices to truly make the most of the peace and tranquility of this unique retreat.
