What attractions does Broken Hill offer?

Broken Hill offers a range of art galleries, museums and heritage trails to explore. The surrounding area features National Parks, historic towns, famous film locations and real Outback experiences like the magnificent Living Desert Sculptures. Or why not go down a historic mine?

Are there flights over Lake Eyre from Broken Hill?

Yes. Three scenic flight operators fly out of Broken Hill to Lake Eyre and other destinations (such as the Menindee Lakes) – Silver City Air CharterSilver City Scenic Flights and Wettenhall Air Services. Scenic flights over Broken Hill are also available.

Do I need a 4WD to explore the area? Which roads are sealed?

First of all, all the major roads to Broken Hill are sealed, so getting here is easy. Roads from Broken Hill to Silverton, the Living Desert and Sculptures and Menindee are also sealed. A 4WD is not necessary on most major unsealed roads in the area, providing there hasn't been any recent rain or flooding. Roads in National Parks are unsealed and generally fine for 2WD vehicles.

Where can we camp?

Broken Hill is well serviced with caravan parks. Check out the Broken Hill Tourist Park, the Lake View Caravan Park, or Penrose Park in Silverton (only 25km from the city). There are also numerous camp sites in the National Parks.

What fruit and vegetables can I bring into Broken Hill?

What time zone is Broken Hill operating on?

Broken Hill and Silverton are the only towns in NSW that operate on Central Standard Time. Check current time here.

Can I get fuel in Broken Hill?

There are a number of petrol stations in Broken Hill - Caltex, BP, Shell, etc. – no 24h petrol station though. Most of them serve LPG as well.

What supermarkets are in Broken Hill?

There are a number of supermarkets in Broken Hill - Coles, Woolworths, Foodland, IGA etc.

What banks have branches in Broken Hill?

The Credit Union, St George Bank, NAB, ANZ, Westpac and CBA all have branches located within Broken Hill.

When is Broken Hill’s tourist season?

Broken Hill's tourist season generally begins mid to late March and runs until the end of October. Peak periods during this time are the school holiday periods, April, July and September/October.

How long do I need to spend in Broken Hill to cover everything?

We recommend 4 to 5 days to explore Broken Hill’s sights, heritage trails, museums, galleries including Silverton and the Living Desert area just out of town. 

What's the current population of Broken Hill?

The current population for Broken Hill is around 19,000.

What is mined in Broken Hill?

The three types of ore mined are lead, silver and zinc. Perilya and CBH Resources are the two companies currently mining in Broken Hill.

Can I do an underground mine tour?

The Historic Day Dream Mine is 33km from Broken Hill on the way to Silverton, and tours run daily.

Are bookings required for the volunteer walk tour?

No, bookings are not required for the volunteer walk tour. Tours leave the Broken Hill Visitor Information Centre three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) at 10.00am. Tours do not operate during the summer months.

What is the phone/wireless internet reception like in Broken Hill?

If you are not on the 3G network, phone/internet reception can be patchy in Broken Hill but all major carriers are available (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone). Out of town 3G phone reception will drop in and out depending which direction you are travelling and how close you are to the next town.

What range of food is available?

Broken Hill has a range of food outlets which include Chinese, Italian, Indian, Mediterranean, Thai and Australian specialties. Broken Hill’s restaurants include fast food, cafe, al a carte, five star dining and family friendly clubs.

What can we do with children in Broken Hill?

There are plenty of parks and playgrounds for the little ones. The museums have interactive content for children or you can take your kids on an adventure down the Historic Day Dream Mine. Penrose Park out at Silverton has playgrounds and a little zoo.

No, pets are not permitted within the Living Desert and Sculpture Symposium.
