New Crown Hotel Motel, Hay

Adventures

Eat, drink and sleep at Hay's ever-charming New Crown Hotel Motel.

In a town as friendly as Hay you can rest assured that it is almost impossible to visit one of the pubs without meeting some of the local characters. They might not be other patrons, mind you, but could simply be the folk who had enough substance to take on running the establishment. Bec and Ronaldo started managing the New Crown Hotel Motel in February 2014, and ever since they have been working tirelessly to get the place to match their vision for it.

“I have plans for the whole pub,” Bec says energetically, “but I have to be careful not to change the public bar at the front too much, because the regulars like it the way it is.”

The New Crown has been a hub for social life in Hay ever since it opened its doors in the centre of town in 1900, but Bec is determined to bring the building into the 21st century.

She started her blitz in the dining room by giving it a fresh coat of paint, and then turned her attention to the accommodation upstairs. There are 10 rooms available for guests on the first floor, and a two-bedroom apartment out the back. Despite offering some of the best value accommodation in town, Bec is determined that each room should get a makeover.

“I am updating the colour scheme and all the rooms are getting new beds, linen, and curtains,” she says.

The rooms all have pleasantly high ceilings and lots of natural night and are fitted with the mod-cons like air-conditioning and televisions. There are tea and coffee facilities available and the hotel’s bistro serves generously sized meals in the lounge downstairs.

Guests are also able to relax in the fresh air on the verandah outside their room, which looks down onto the green courtyard at the back of the pub.

The sunny beer garden

The New Crown offers a number of different room configurations to provide different types of travellers a home away from home. Solo adventurers can get a single rom from $50 and groups of up to three will nab a triple with an ensuite bathroom for $70. For four or more people there is backpacker style accommodation offering single beds with a shared bathroom, or the two-bedroom unit out the back offers a separate bathroom, lounge and kitchen.

Spending a night or two in the Crown Hotel is a sure-fire way to catch a glimpse of Hay’s gentle soul. In the lounge you will see locals enjoying meals with their families and friends, coming together to say hi to one another; weaving the knots that bind the web of their interconnected lives. The friendliness of these folk to travellers is legendary. This is a town built upon the comings and goings of strangers who, in passing, leave behind their own stories and take home fond memories of the hospitable outback characters who live without regrets and as truly themselves.

The New Crown Hotel Motel is located at 117 Lachlan St, Hay, NSW.
