A charming country escape complete with friendly farm animals, Poppy’s Cottage offers cosy accommodation and warm hospitality.
Country retreats don’t come much more authentic than Poppy’s Cottage. Situated on a 140-acre property on the outskirts of Armidale, the cottage shares a two-acre fenced yard with the main farmhouse, where hosts Poppy and Adrian live with their two dogs and menagerie of farm animals.
Originally built as a miner’s hut near Hillgrove in the 1860s, the cottage was transported to its current location when the main farmhouse was built in 1901. A small two-room hidey-hole with an en suite bathroom, it’s set up to sleep four with a queen bed and two singles. The singles share the first room with a lounge area complete with a mountainous stack of books, while the main bedroom also houses a dining table and enjoys peaceful views of the garden and paddocks beyond. The house is furnished warmly, with country-style antiques and decorations a stark contrast to the sterility of many roadside motels, yet at a comparative price.
Frolicking in the garden is a consortium of pet ducks, geese and chickens, along with a Shetland pony, two dogs and a cat. The kids will love helping collect eggs in the morning; if you’re kid-free you’ll relish the idyllic country serenity, perhaps with a good book in one of several quiet nooks of the garden.
Poppy is a wonderful host, warm and vivacious and, happily for her guests, she loves to cook. Breakfast is included in the tariff, and comprises farm eggs and bacon, home-baked bread, jam from the fruit of the trees in the garden, yoghurt, fresh and poached fruit and freshly squeezed orange juice. A delicious way to start the day, but you may need to take a nap again to sleep it off!
Dinner is an optional extra, with Poppy preparing three courses and serving you in the candle-lit cottage. A bottle of local wine is included in the $60 per person price ($50 for kids under 12).
Conveniently located around 15 minutes from the attractions of Armidale and close to the waterfalls and national parks of New England, it’s worth popping in to say g’day at Poppy’s Cottage.
