Food, wine and music since 1923.
There’s no doubt about it, Mudgee is a bone fide wine town and at its social heart is Roth’s Wine Bar. Dating back to 1923, this cosy historic venue has a long history of supplying local food and wine to Mudgee residents and visitors, a traditional still very much alive and well today.
It all began when Robert Roth left Craigmoor (now Robert Oatley Vineyards) at 22 years of age seeking a business venture of his own. He purchased the terrace home the bar is still housed in today, originally opening the space as a general store.
And while Roth’s liquor license was gained in 1923, it’s said certain ‘under the counter’ drinks could be purchased at the store by thirsty farmers when they’d travel into town for supplies.
These days, Roth’s Wine Bar is a popular social hub that celebrates Mudgee’s exceptional local wine and food. 80 per cent of wines on the menu are local, while the remainder are carefully curated Australian and international wines of interest.
If you’d like to spend an evening travelling across the vineyards of Mudgee without leaving the comfort of your spot by the fire, Roth’s is the place to visit. But if the couch at home is beckoning, Roth’s has you sorted there, too. The bar has recently opened a wine cellar stocking more than 100 local wines, making it the largest retailer of its kind in the area.
But it’s not just quality local wine you’ll get to enjoy at Roth’s, the venue also serves up delicious food made from local produce treated simply. The menu is full of yummy tapas-style meals and wood-fire oven-roasted pizzas, so you’re bound to find the perfect snack to accompany the main course, which is, of course, the wine.
The beautiful heritage building that houses Roth’s is full of hidden nooks and cosy corners, so it’s not hard to settle in for the night. In the cooler months the fireplaces are stoked, making this a wonderfully welcoming haven in the chilly Mudgee evenings.
There’s live music every Friday and Saturday night, adding to the vibe of this charming bar that is laden with local history and overflowing with a genuine love for local Mudgee wine.
