Every year on the October long weekend, Siding Spring Observatory in Connabarabran hosts StarFest, a three day intergalactic extravaganza taking place during the Festival of the Stars. StarFest incorporates a wide range of exciting events, this year kicking off with Science in the Pub on Friday from 7.30pm. Held at the Coonabarabran Bowling Club, this fun filled evening features a panel of astronomers discussing the mysteries of the Universe. Professor Fred Watson will coordinate the evening, with the (inter)stellar line-up including ABC’s Robyn Williams as MC, Professor Victoria Meadows, Professor Naomi McClure-Griffiths, Dr Vanessa Moss and Dr Amanda Bauer.
On the Saturday, Siding Spring Observatory will be holding an open day from 9.30am-4pm. This is the one day of the year where you really experience what goes on inside this fascinating facility. The day includes a tour of the telescopes, talks by world famous astronomers, activities for the kids, and a sausage sizzle.
On Saturday evening from 6pm, Milroy Observatory will host a night sky exploration with a talk by Cam Wylie. A Star-B-Que will be held during sunset, with a barbecue dinner and light refreshments available. Then, to wrap up proceedings, the Bok Lecture will be held on Sunday at 11am at the Coonabarabran Bowling Club. This fascinating event features Professor Victoria Meadows discussing ‘NASA’s Search for Life Beyond the Solar System’. Tickets are free but a gold coin donation is appreciated.
