Old and new mingle delightfully in this revamped hotel.
Proving that good things do come to those who wait, the Commercial Boutique Hotel has at last been given a new lease of life after being transformed into a luxurious establishment with first-class accommodation.
The ramshackle hotel had endured more than seven years of closure and neglect when it was purchased in September 2013 by a Brisbane family who recognised the need for an upmarket watering hole in Tenterfield. Twelve months and some serious renovations later, the rejuvenated hotel was reopened in September 2014.
“We wanted to create something different in town that wasn’t already here,” says part-owner Tim Dillon, who owns the hotel with his wife, her two siblings and her parents.
“There were enough pubs in town, which was probably one of the reasons why it was on the market for so long. A lot of people were apparently looking at turning it into a backpacker hostel, but we went in the other direction and turned it into a wine and craft-beer bar, a la carte restaurant and boutique accommodation.”
This dedication to indulgence is palpable when you step inside the front doors, with the revamped interior boasting the perfect mix of art deco style and modern opulence. The space has been cleverly dressed up with warm and inviting features, including lush carpets and contemporary furnishings, but the heritage of the building is still very much front and centre.
“Most of what we’ve done is just hold on to the original and give it a new lease on life,” Tim says. “Wherever we could, we’ve either restored or just exposed some of the features that have been covered up over the years.” A glowing example of this is the original wood-fire oven they discovered hidden behind a splashback in the kitchen. Having already settled on a redesign for the kitchen, they decided to make a showpiece out of the oven and relocated it to the dining room.
The hotel’s accommodation also received a drastic overhaul, each bedroom being enlarged to include its own ensuite – certainly a change from the small rooms with shared facilities that existed previously. Now there are seven luxurious and beautifully decorated rooms upstairs, with one downstairs catering for disabled guests and those travelling with pets.
Thoughtful touches include bespoke French bedheads, walk-in rain showers, complimentary WiFi access, ducted air conditioning and flat-screen smart TVs. The rooms are clearly targeted at the top of the market and are perfect for those looking to couple their trip to Tenterfield with a little indulgence.
A gourmet breakfast is offered, with options including bacon and eggs, house-made granola with poached pear, and homemade croissants. Lunch and dinner are also accounted for, with the hotel’s downstairs restaurant and craft beer bar serving up a selection of pizzas, pastas, tapas and more.
