Charming country accommodation in an idyllic riverside setting just 10 minutes from the centre of Dubbo.
Spend 10 minutes cruising away from town through the fertile farming land of the river flats alongside the Macquarie on Old Dubbo Road and you’ll happen upon a pair of places to stay – the Outback Cellar and Country Cottage.
Located on the 125-acre working farm of Martin and Fiona Simmons and their three little girls, both are charming self-contained facilities positioned across the driveway from one another but offer quite different styles of accommodation.
Outback Cellar is a former wine cellar that has been tastefully converted into a loft-style studio apartment. A large paved courtyard greets you, complete with BBQ, woodpile to feed the slow combustion fire (in winter this will already be burning upon your arrival) and even a wood-fired pizza oven. A stone garden path leads from there to a large grassed area, beyond which are paddocks where cows and the occasional horse graze peacefully. There’s plenty of space for the kiddies to play, and city children will get a particular thrill from the farm animals living alongside them.
The large open-plan interior includes a mezzanine level – reached by a central spiral staircase – that houses an extremely comfortable queen-sized bed and a couple of chairs. Downstairs can accommodate up to five more, with three single beds set up plus a double pull-out sofa. A large, square wooden table in the middle of the room has space for that potential crowd of seven, while a well-equipped kitchen has all the appliances and implements you would need to happily self-cater in this charming country abode for as long as you like.
The bathroom is well appointed, and the entire apartment is spacious and immaculately presented, comfortable and unpretentiously styled.
But should you prefer a more cosy style of country accommodation, the Country Cottage, just across the way, is for you. The original farm cottage, it’s an extremely cute two-bedroom affair. The main bedroom has a queen-sized bed and an en suite bathroom; three singles and another bathroom complete accommodation in the second room. A portacot can also be arranged if your herd demands it.
Living quarters are cosy yet contain everything you need. The lounge will be popular in winter thanks to the fireplace that forms the central feature. The kitchen has everything you would expect to allow easy self-catering, and the entire cottage adheres to a charming rustic country styling with antique furniture and gorgeous country linen and drapes making the place very quaint indeed.
Off the kitchen is a veranda and fenced yard complete with orange trees and a chook pen from where the kids will love collecting eggs in the morning. A pair of friendly cats and a little black dog wander in and out as they please. They’re always up for a pat and will happily show you around their little slice of rural paradise.
If you’re planning a visit to Dubbo and are craving fresh country air, you’d be mad not to call in and take them up on the offer.
