A unique, 5-star boutique hotel offering luxury accommodation with a twist.
On the outskirts of Tamworth, just 2km from the centre of town in her leafy and illustrious northern suburbs, lies an acre and a half of whimsical gardens hiding the unique and luxurious Retreat at Froog-Moore Park.
A five-room boutique hotel catering to couples and travelling singes, The Retreat’s ethos centers on romance, good food and the view that travelling for business needn’t be a sterile experience.
Its weekday traffic is predominantly professionals on the road seeking homely and soulful accommodation, while weekends and holidays are the domain of pleasure-seeking couples looking to spoil one another in the secluded luxury and tasteful hospitality offered by The Retreat and its owners, Sandy and Peter Moore.
Your biggest quandary will be choosing a room. They are each individually themed and nothing short of magical; from the luxurious purple and gold drapery of the Moroccan Fantasy boudoir, to the minimalist tranquility of the Maeda Japanese room.
The Succulent Suite offers Edwardian apartment-style accommodation including a screened veranda, private library and lavish private dining ‘tower’ with staggering glass walls framing the spectacular Japanese maples in the garden beyond. You’ll delight in watching the possums frolic outside as you enjoy having a gourmet home-cooked dinner served to you in your romantic dining room for two.
But if you and your partner in crime have a streak of the kinky about you, The Dungeon might be your choice. Playfully decorated to resemble a dank and long forgotten underground chamber, the Dungeon is titillating dark and moody.
The Henderson Room rounds out the selection, opulently themed to African tribal and offering full disabled access.
The Retreat offers room-only packages, but I can confidently say you’d be stark raving mad not to capitalise on the cooking prowess of the lovely Sandy, who is a published culinary journalist with a passion for fresh, seasonal produce and preserves.
Peter, meanwhile, is an avid gardener who lovingly maintains the property’s abundant fruit trees, vegie patches and herb gardens. Make no mistake about it, these two are a match made in slow-food heaven, with Sandy using produce grown onsite to prepare healthy and delicious meals for her guests.
Her skill is not being overstated, either. It is without hyperbole that I report the brekky I had at The Retreat was truly one for the record books. Sandy’s homemade toasted muesli was served with poached plums from the garden and natural yoghurt sweetened with local honey. I was then served Sandy’s signature breakfast dish – Moroccan eggs – a delicately layered meal with the perfect balance of texture, vibrancy and freshness. Toasted onion sourdough was topped with lime hummus, perfectly scrambled eggs sprinkled with crispy shallots and shredded mint.
Simple, light and delicious. Peter and Sandy have spent a great deal of time travelling through Italy and studying the Italian way of growing and preparing food, having completed over 80 cooking classes in Europe. Visitors to Tamworth are the lucky beneficiaries of that knowledge, with the pair’s passion for the subject matter at the heart of The Retreat.
Having also travelled extensively across Australia for business, Peter and Sandy have learnt first hand as customers what they do and don’t look for in boutique hotels and have created their own truly unique spin on this style of accommodation.
The Retreat is eccentric, elegant and playful, much like its hosts, whose warmth and sincerity is woven throughout the property. Tamworth’s only five star accommodation and the winner of multiple luxury hotel awards, The Retreat is an experience not to be missed for travellers and locals alike.
