The Roses Café, Goulburn

Enjoy lunch among the roses at this popular Goulburn cafe.

It's easy to see how The Roses Café – nestled across the road from Belmore Park in Goulburn with its overflowing rose beds – got its name.

Occupying the historic technical school building of the old Mechanics Institute, which was built in 1889, it has been transformed into a haven of everything fresh. It is filled with cakes, sweet and savoury muffins, quiches, salads, pies, frittatas, biscuits, and fresh flowers.

It’s recommended by the locals; Stephen from the Argyle Emporium bookshop around the corner says: “It’s where I always tell people to go and none of them has come back unhappy yet.”

The staff at The Roses make it stand out, both because of their startlingly pink uniforms and their genuinely kind and welcoming service. Even when busily ferrying food, cutlery and water to and fro, they always have smiles on their faces.

The Roses Café provides a classic country café experience. The décor is pleasant and warm, mixing the rich dark hues of the wooden tables with the fresh brightness of traditional cut flowers.

The extensive menu is all the more impressive as everything is made from scratch onsite. Every item on the menu represents time-honoured cuisine, with the diversity of options available meaning there’s guaranteed to be something to satisfy every appetite. The only problem is trying to decide what to have. Luckily, the staff are on hand to provide expert recommendations.

The prices are more than reasonable for the quality on offer, and the traffic stepping across the threshold is prodigious. Business people, groups of friends and loving couples occupy the tables, while testament to the friendly atmosphere comes from the number of folk comfortably eating here on their own.

While the coffee and cooked meals are good, the sweet and savoury baked goods give The Roses Café its biggest lift. The talents in the kitchen have found a recipe that’s really working well.

The Roses Café is located at 10 Montague St, Goulburn, NSW. Call (02) 4822 2248 for more information.
