Homewares, gifts, flowers and coffee; there’s a lot to like at Thom, Dick and Harry’s.
It’s hard to know whether ‘come for the coffee, stay for the homewares’ or the opposite is true of Thom, Dick and Harry’s on the main drag of Broken Hill in the heart of the NSW Outback. Certainly both have merit, with the smell of freshly ground Rio coffee beans wafting through the store, tempting those perusing luxury kitchenware, beautiful homewares, scented candles, gifts and even clothing. Similarly, just try to get to the café section at the back of the shop (or to get out, for that matter) without finding some adorable item or six to purchase along the way. And that doesn’t even include the fresh flowers on display at the florist counter. Clever merchandising indeed, but it’s hard to go wrong when you’ve essentially rolled everything lovely into one shop.
We’ll start with the coffee and the food, because probably that’s where you’ll start, too. This is one of the best coffee spots in the ‘Hill, and it’s complemented perfectly by a window full of freshly baked sweets and a well-balanced menu of light and delicious brekky and lunch meals. There are a few tables outside the store on Argent Street’s wide, grand footpath, but inside you’ll be perched at a share table surrounded, it would seem, by a thousand beautiful objects to catch your attention as you put away a homemade meal served with warm country hospitality.
Now, to the fun part: shopping. TD&H applies a distinctly ‘more is more’ approach to its product range, its shelves almost overflowing with an impressive lineup of brands. There’s something for every, well, Thom, Dick and Harry here – a wonderful resource in a remote outback town. Deluxe kitchenware brands including Chasseur, Kitchen Aid and Scanpan mix in with a tastefully curated collection of glassware, vases, ornamental items and furniture that speak of the creative eye of owner Paul Whitehouse. Scented candles and lush body products come care of Crabtree & Evelyn and Ecoya (to name a few), while clothing and jewellery by Elk and Samantha Wills are sure to tempt. Then, of course, there’s the floristry department, and who doesn’t love fresh flowers?
Whether you’re looking for a beautiful or practical item for your home, a gift or a little something to spoil yourself – or perhaps just fancy a double latte – Thom, Dick and Harry’s is a shopping experience you won’t want to miss in Broken Hill.
