For the best cherry pie in the town, head to Wilders.
Young is known as the Cherry Capital of Australia, and Wilders is regarded as having the best cherry pie in town. Now that’s saying something. Its reputation precedes it, and it doesn’t disappoint. With a cabinet full of the famous pie, it’s impossible to leave without taking one home for dessert.
But Wilders is much more than a pie shop. Indeed the main cabinet is a veritable smorgasbord of seriously yummy looking baked goods, and with two stories of seating available and light meals served, this is the perfect place for lunch. There’s even a kiddies corner for the rugrats.
And it all came from humble beginnings. Newlyweds Milty and Olga Wilder opened the bakery in 1950, living on site and working side by side for 30 years making bread, cakes, pastries, pies and buns. Their children, Alan and Wendy Wilder, took over the business in 1989, adding coffee and tables and chairs, which changed the vibe of Wilders from and in-and-out bakery to a place to sit and relax with friends. Back then, it was just four tables and sixteen chairs, but today Wilders can accommodate 150 people. It’s little wonder the venue is available for functions, and Wilders also provides catering and events both on and offsite.
But it’s hardly fair that the best cherry pie in the best cherry growing region in Australia be restricted just to Young and its guests, and as such Wilders has a presence at several farmers markets around Sydney. Wendy’s son takes care of that side of things, and with this third generation of Wilders in the works, it looks like this much-loved family business will continue to remain as such.
So if you’re visiting Young, or even just passing through, be sure to call into Wilders and grab yourself a famous cherry pie, or as it probably should be called, sheer joy wrapped in pastry. You won’t regret it.
