Helm Wines was established in 1973 as a pioneer of the Canberra Wine Region. Helm rieslings are regarded as some of the best in Australia, being described as 'taking my breath away'. Ken Helm was described by another critic as a master of riesling in Australia. James Halliday has rated the winery at five red stars for the last four years - 'an outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality'. Helm Wines is also known for cabernet sauvignon, a varietal wine they have produced in the Canberra District since 1979, gaining a reputation as a leader with the style in the district. Helm Wines are located in a beautiful rural Valley lined with 25 hectares of vines, six kilometres from Murrumbateman on the Barton Highway, in the Yass Valley Shire. Their tasting room is the 1888 Toual Public school house which is listed by the National Trust.
